Cyst Removal Surgery

Cyst removal surgery involves removing the fluid as well as the surrounding sac. Typically if cysts are simply drained without removal of the sac, such as in the case of infection, the cyst will likely return. Small cysts, less than 5 cm, on non-sensitive areas (arms, legs) can be removed in his Henderson clinic under local anesthetic. Deeper cysts and cysts in sensitive areas sometimes require more extensive surgery to achieve a good result.

Dr. Dasari performs a variety of cysts removal procedures for the following:

  • Epidermoid (Inclusion) Cyst: Keratin builds up under the surface of the skin and causes inclusion cysts to have white creamy discharge. Typically the discharge is foul-smelling, deriving its odor from the dead skin cells. These can grow as large as 18 cm and require the mobilization of surrounding tissue to fill in the defect during surgical removal. These cysts become dark red and painful when infected and can appear in various areas of the body including the back, legs, arms, face, and neck.
  • Sebaceous Cyst: Sebum is an oily secretion found in hair follicles. These follicles can grow inward into a pore and cause problems on the back, face, scalp, and armpits. These can also grow quite large, become infected, cause pain, and require surgery.
  • Pilonidal Cyst: Pilonidal cysts typically appear along the upper gluteal cleft (the “butt crack”), and result in periodic infections. They can appear during the teenage years and continue into adulthood. As the name suggests, the cyst derives from hair that grows inward. Unless the hair is removed and the cyst wall is totally removed, these areas tend to form recurrent and persistent painful infections even after drainage. Typically a flap of skin is used to cover this very sensitive, high movement area, to achieve good wound healing.

  • Breast Cyst: Breast Cysts can be malignant in nature and should always be treated with caution. Small cysts and fibrocystic disease can be characterized by ultrasound and MRI of the breasts. Larger cysts can also be the result of tumors or simple fluid collections. Typically large, growing cysts are removed and sent for pathologic evaluation. Close surveillance is needed to ensure these cysts do not recur or if previously cancerous, do not reform. Occasionally additional procedures and specialist treatments are recommended to address specific problems.
  • Ganglion Cyst: Fluid-filled sacs, called ganglion cysts, can appear around the joints of the wrist, hand, ankles, feet, knees, and elbows. Sometimes they appear due to repetitive pressure or injury, which can become quite deforming and interfere with the range of motion of the joints. These should be evaluated for surgery by a competent practitioner with all options presented, including non-surgical options.

What you need to know about cyst removal surgery

A cyst is filled with fluid and typically has a lining that forms a sac. The fluid inside can be comprised of skin cells, pus, and bacteria. While most cysts are benign, some can be malignant and should be evaluated by a trained specialist. The most concerning types are the ones that grow in size over time. It is better to have cyst removal surgery while it is smaller, so they do not become problematic.
